Conservation burial is natural burial that serves a higher conservation purpose by being part of

efforts to restore and protect land.

Foxfield Preserve meets the highest standards for conservation burial as set forth by the

Green Burial Council.

Here’s how:

Foxfield Preserve requires a “green” or “natural burial.”

       • biodegradable container

       • no embalming

       • no vault

Foxfield Preserve’s burials go far beyond a simple, natural burial.  Here, burial is also a conservation

tool used to restore and protect natural areas.

. At Foxfield Preserve burials will only be permitted in areas where burial will not degrade the land.. Some areas of the preserve will be “off limits” and some areas may only be suitable for cremated remains. The decision will be based on what is best for the ecological restoration of the preserve.

Restoration efforts have already begun at Foxfield Preserve with naturalists planting 15 acres of native

prairie grasses and wildflowers.  The remaining areas will be reforested.  There will also be intra-site specific restoration or micro site restoration- meaning plot owners can plant approved species on their plot or family members can plant after burial.  Please keep in mind land restoration is a long term project with long term goals, and changes are seen in decades, not months.  In 25 years, we will have a young forest with plenty of small trees and herbaceous groundcover.  In 80 years we will have a mature forest and in 200 years we will have a truley unique and diverse area with rolling meadows and towering trees.

Moving to a bigger picture, Foxfield Preserve is located adjacent to The Wilderness Center. It will enhance biodiversity at the Center by creating a larger “island” of natural land. A larger “island” equates to greater biodiversity. It will also serve as buffer land to enhance The Wilderness Center’s core properties especially Sigrist Woods.

Moving to yet a bigger picture, Foxfield Preserve will contribute in both land area and financially to The Wilderness Center’s greater land conservation efforts. In particular it will help connect a Sugar Creek Biodiversity Corridor. This project has a long-term goal of connecting the Center’s headquarters to Brewster Wetland, Lash’s Bog State Nature Preserve, Falcon Flats and Beach City Wildlife Area. It is truly a landscape size conservation vision.

Finally, Foxfield Preserve will help with The Wilderness Center’s educational mission. It is not good enough to preserve land today. We must also prepare the next generation to inherit the earth…for inherit it they will.

Foxfield Preserve’s cemetery function will be overseen by The Wilderness Center to assure that it remains true to the nature preserve mission. As Foxfield Preserve achieves certification by the Green Burial Council, it will have enrolled yet another conservation organization to hold a conservation easement on the land to add yet another layer of protection.
