Shrouds and Containers
Requirements
The Green Burial Council has certification standards for burial containers and shrouds. While we recommend choosing a certified container, we can accept any container or shroud that meets those standards and can support the weight of the decedent. Please discuss your options with your Funeral Director and Foxfield staff to ensure a dignified burial for your loved one.
Containers
Coffin and casket choices include woven, cardboard, and wood. Cardboard containers are very affordable and are often selected by families who want the opportunity to decorate using non-toxic materials. Willow, bamboo, and seagrass are natural materials commonly used to make beautiful woven caskets. Wooden containers must be free from glues, finishes, and nonbiodegradable materials.
Shrouds
Shrouds are a natural cloth used to wrap a loved one for burial. Foxfield requires all shrouds to have a wooden support inside to stabilize the body during transport and lowering. We recommend the Kinkaraco Pure Light shroud that includes an internal board and sewn-in lowering straps. This shroud is available for purchase at a discount from The Wilderness Center gift shop.
